The diagram compares long-term international migration in UK as divided into three main categories, which are immigration, emigration and net migration, from the year 1999 to 2008
Overall, all categories fluctuated over the given period, however, the number of immigration and emigration increased in the final year in comparison to net migration.
In 1999, immigration received the highest number, at around 450 thousand, whereas emigration was under 300 and net migration was about 180 thousand. Through the period, both immigration and emigration had fluctuations on the contrary to the number of net migration, it remained relatively stable until 2004.
Net migration increased significantly in 2004 and reached its peak of around 220 thousand, before falling under 190 in 2008. Emigration reached its peak in the final year with over 400 thousand, whilst immigration had the upper peak of 600 thousand in 2006, before falling around 590 in the end.
