The chart provides information regarding UK immigration, emigration, and net migration from 1999 to 2008.
During this period, both immigration and emigration rates increased, although the figures for immigration were significantly higher. Notably, net migration peaked in 2004 and again in 2007.
In 1999, more than 450,000 people immigrated to the UK, while the number of emigrants was just under 300,000. This resulted in a net migration figure of approximately 160,000, which remained relatively stable until 2003. From 1999 to 2004, immigration rose by nearly 150,000 individuals, in contrast to a much smaller increase in emigration. As a result, net migration reached its peak of almost 250,000 in 2004.
Following 2004, the immigration rate stayed elevated, while emigration numbers fluctuated. Emigration experienced a sudden drop in 2007, but rebounded in 2008, peaking at around 420,000 individuals. Consequently, net migration rose to approximately 240,000 in 2007, but then decreased to about 160,000 in 2008.
