The graph provides information about the percentage of the number people who have been living in cities in Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia between 1970 and 2020 including the predictions for 2030 and 2040.
Overall, a large amount of population has moved to cities between these years. All the cities had a dramatic increase in this time period.
Malaysia started with 30% of population in 1970, has increased steadily in 50 years. Indonesia also followed the same path with Malaysia and rose from 13% to around 50% from 1970 to 2020. On the other hand, Philippines started as the highest with 32%. After remaining steady between 1970 and 1980, it rose to almost 50% in 20 years. However it started declining to around 40% in 2010 but increased relatively in 2020. Thailand increased 10% in the first 10 years but remained stable from 1990 to 2020.
The predictions show the number of people living in the cities will keep rising until 2040. Malaysia will have the highest percentage of metropolitans in 2040 with being 84%. Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia will be relatively close with having 60%, almost 55% and 50% of cosmopolitans.
