From its percentage of metropolitan level increasing from 19% to 30% between 1970 and two decades later, thailand levels off from 1990 to 2020, before climbing moderately to 45%, the lowest level among four countries. Starting at around one-thrid of its population living in cities, around 20% of philippines’ population migrate out of rural area from 1980 and the subsequent 10 years. While it dropped significantly to 42% in the next 20 years, it is projected that the level will reach 55% in 2040. Indonesia and Malaysia both show a similar trend but with different ratio. After the proportion increased gradually by 10% from Malaysia’s 14% level and 15% from Indonesia’s 30% level from the 70s to 80s, they both experienced a doubled growth rate over the next half decade and become the second highest and highest percentage of metropolitans in the four Asian countries respectively.
