The line graph illustrates the changes in the prices of four different food and consumer items between 1979 and 2009.
Overall, the trends show that the prices for all categories increased over the 30-year period. Fresh fruits and vegetables experienced the highest and fastest growth, while carbonated drinks saw the lowest increase.
In 1979, the prices of all four categories were very similar, starting between 60 and 70. By 1985, they all rose steadily and reached about 100. After this year, the trends started to differ significantly.
The price of fresh fruits and vegetables grew rapidly after 1985. It climbed sharply with some fluctuations, reaching a peak of around 330 in 2008 before dropping slightly to about 325 in 2009.
In contrast, the other three categories showed a more gradual increase. The consumer price index rose steadily to finish at approximately 210 in 2009. Sugar and sweets followed a similar trend, ending just below the consumer price index at around 200. Finally, carbonated drinks grew at the slowest pace, reaching only about 150 by the end of the period.
