The given line graph illustrates the total amount of goods transported by four different types of modes in the UK between 1980 and 2008.

Overall, it can be seen that the amount of goods contained by road was higher than any other modes, despite some fluctuation. Although water and rail transportation started at similar point, water exceeded the average amount of goods transport at the end of the period.

Looking closely at the chart, goods transported by road started at around 70 million tones in 1980. After experiencing a moderate fluctuation, it reached at nearly 90 million tones in 2004 and increased slightly to 81 million tones in 2008. Meanwhile, pipeline began roughly at 3 million tones in 1980 and then increased moderately until the end of the period reaching at 23 million tones,

In contrast, water and rail transportation both stood at nearly equal point at 40 million tones and remain unchanged until 1984. However, the figures of water transportation surpassed rail and peaked at nearly 60 million tones in 1988. After some minor fluctuation the figure reached at 65 million tones. On the other hand, railway transportation declined gradually from 40 to 30 million tones and rebounded to nearly 40 million tones in 1996 to 2000.
