Overall, the percentage of Australian exports to China, and India showed an upward trend throughout the period, while the reverse was true for those to Japan, and the US. It is also noticeable that the most drastic shift in Australian exports proportion was witnessed in China.
Looking at the chart in more detail, the percentage of Australian exports to China experienced a gradual increase from approximately 2.5% in 1990 to 2005. After soaring to exactly 25% in 2010, this figure still went up slightly to well over 25% in the final year. Besides, commencing at roughly 1%, the percentage of Australian exports to India remained stable at this level in the next ten years before peaking at around 7% in 2010, it finally dipped to just 5% in 2012.
Turning to the remaining countries, there was a considerable decline in the proportion of Australian exports to India from just over 25% to around 20% in the first five years, the data for Japan decreased steadily to nearly 17% in the last year. In addition, the percentage of Australian exports to the US was the 2nd largest in the initial decades of this period, standing at just over 10%. A remarkable reduction of approximately 5% in this data had been observed in the next five years. After increasing to just over 10% in 2000, it decreased significantly to roughly 5% before recovering to about 7% in 2012.
