The given line graph illustrates the proportion of exports from Australia to four different regions in 22 years, from 1990 to 2012.
Overall, there were decrease in the percentages of Australian export to Japan and the US, while the opposite was true in the case of China and India. Additionally, China became the dominant destination for Australian goods in the final years.
In 1990, Japan imported significantly more from Australia than any other country listed, accounting for approximately 26% of Australia export. After that, this figure declined gradually to around 18% in 2002, before fluctuating to end of the period. A similar downward trend was observed in exports to the US, beginning at 11% in 1990 then fluctuating until 1999, when it reaches the peak at 13% before falling steady to the end of the timeframe.
In contrast, exports to China experienced a substantial rise from only 3% initially to nearly 30% in 2012, overtaking Japan three years to become Australia’s largest goods export market. India followed a similar pattern, despite of a lower rate. It began at the lowest point (1%), by 2009, India imported for Australia goods reached the highest point at 10%, the next years later, saw a slight drop to about 5% in 2012.
