The line chart illustrates the percentage of Australian export to four different countries, namely Japan, the US, China and India between 1990 and 2012.
Overall, it can be seen that Japan and the US showed a significant decline, despite some fluctuations in the US line. In contrast, China experienced a dramatic increase and became the leading export destination by 2010.
In 1990, Japan had the hightest percentage of Australian export at about 26%. This figure fell to 20% in 1995 and then decreased gradually to around 17% in 2012. The US started at about 11%, fluctuated during the period, and ended at 7% by the end of the period.
By contrast, China and India showed an overall increase. China share increased gradually from just 2% in 1990, before rising sharply to 11% in 2005. This trend continue to rise and reached approximately 26% in 2012, making China Australia’s largest export destination. Meanwhile, India remained stable at around 1% from 1990 to 2000. Its percentage then increased to 5% in 2005 and reached the peak at approximately 7% in 2010, before falling slightly to 5% in 2012.
