The line graph presented delineates the total population of the two most populous nations in the world, China and India, from 2000 up to the present and makes predictions for future growth trend until 2050.
Overall, it is observable that the growth trend of India is different from that of China as the latter’s population is expected to plateau by 2030 then begins its progressive decline in the years to come. India, by contrast, is predicted to maintain fast-growing yet steady rise until the end of this fifty-year period, and even beyond this point.
At the beginning of the inspected period, China’s population was significantly higher than India’s by over 200 million people. Both countries’ birth rates continued to climb until 2020, resulting in a population scale of nearly 1.45 billion for China and 1.4 billion for India. However, by 2030, India is expected to start overtaking China from this point forward, and its population will keep soaring dramatically, whereas China will enter its cycle of decline.
China’s downward trend can already be seen in the 2020s, and not until 2030 will it commence its downward trend, going from 1.45 billion down to 1.4 in 2050. This trend has displayed a proclivity to further accelerate past 2050. Conversely, India will have skyrocketed from roughly 1.45 billion to 1.6 billion by then, which is about twice as fast as the rate of China’s shrinking population.
