The line chart illustrates the population of India and China from 2000 to 2025 with predictions to 2050.
Overall, China has been more populous than India, but the opposite ranking is projected by 2050. From 2000 to the present day, both countries have recorded increases in population, with India showing greater growth. However, by 2050, it is expected that China’s figure will decrease, as opposed to the steady rise of the other nation.
The populations of both countries have grown between 2000 and 2025. China started at a higher figure, nearly 1.3 billion, and reported a consistent rise over the years, eventually peaking at about 1.43 billion between 2020 and 2030. Yet India has had a much more pronounced growth. Despite beginning at 1 billion, this country’s population has quickly jumped to 1.4 billion during the same period.
But projections to 2050 present two reversed trends for China and India. While the former will slowly decline to just under 1.4 billion by 2050, the latter is likely to continue growing. Thus, it is expected that India will converge with China at approximately 1.44 billion in 2030 and surpass the nation by 2050, at 1.6 billion.
