The line graph illustrates the amount of air pollutants in the United Kingdom, measured in millions of tonnes, produced by three different sources Industry, Transport, and Households as well as the Total, over a fifteen-year period from 1990 to 2005.
Overall, the total level of air pollutants declined significantly over the period. While emissions from Industry fell considerably, those from Transport and Households remained relatively low throughout, with Transport showing a gradual rise and Households staying largely stable.
In 1990, the total air pollutants stood at approximately 8 million tonnes, the highest point recorded. This figure dropped steadily over the following years, reaching around 5.5 million tonnes by 2005. Industrial emissions, which were the dominant source at roughly 5 million tonnes in 1990, followed a similar downward trend, falling to approximately 1.5 million tonnes at the end of the period.
In contrast, Transport emissions started at around 1 million tonnes in 1990 and increased gradually, overtaking Household emissions and climbing to nearly 3 million tonnes by 2005. Household emissions, meanwhile, remained consistently low throughout the entire period, hovering around 1 million tonnes with very little fluctuation.
