The line graph illustrates the proportion of gym membership between men and women between 1980 and 2010. The measurements were indicated by thousands of people. Overall, it is evident from the chart that the proportion for both sexes fluctuated dramatically over the period.
In detail, the proportion of male members was higher than women at the beginning of the period, standing at just over 2,000 in 1980. After reaching almost 4,000 in the following five years, the proportion started to slump, and then dropped rapidly to about 1,800 members in 1995. However, the proportion leaped back sharply to reach the peak at 5,000 members in 2005, before plunging to just 800 members at the end of the period.
In comparison, the proportion of female members started at merely 1,100 members, rising moderately to almost 2,000 in the next five years, then climbing considerably until 1995. The proportion of female members stood in the range of 2,200 and 2,800 from 1995 to 2005. Eventually, the proportion declined to around 1,900 members in 2010, accounting for a higher number of gym membership compared to men in the final period.
It can be understood that each category experienced corresponding increases and decreases. However, the pattern for the proportion of male membership was still higher than female membership over the time frame. Interestingly, the proportion of female membership was higher than that of male male membership at the end of the period compared to the start of the period.
