Overall, the two cities experienced contrasting trends over the period. While visitor numbers to Dublin showed a general decline despite some fluctuations, Cardiff saw a significant increase, particularly in the final years. By 2020, Cardiff had clearly overtaken Dublin in terms of tourist numbers.
At the beginning of the period, Dublin attracted approximately 3.8 million visitors, compared to about 1.5 million in Cardiff. However, the number of tourists to Dublin decreased steadily to around 2.5 million by 2014. Although there was a brief recovery to roughly 3 million in 2015, the figure then declined gradually, reaching just 2 million by 2020.
In contrast, visitor numbers to Cardiff rose gradually from 1.5 million in 2010 to just over 2 million in 2014. After a slight drop between 2015 and 2017, tourism in Cardiff increased dramatically from 2018 onwards, climbing sharply to approximately 5 million visitors in 2020.
