In contrast, Japan’s unemployment rate steadily increased during this time. It rose from 2.5% in 1993 to roughly 4.5% in 1999. Notably, there was a sharp rise between 1997 and 1998, after which the rate remained fairly stable.
By March 1999, both countries had almost the same unemployment rate, approximately 4.5%, despite starting at very different points.
