The line graph depicts the amount of money spent on books by people in Germany, France, Italy, and Austria, between 1995 and 2005.
Overall, all four countries saw an increase by the latter year. The initial standings in 1995 were (from highest to lowest): Germany, France, Italy, then Austria. By 2005, Austria had the most notable growth, resulting in a final ranking of: Germany, France, Austria, and Italy.
Germany and Italy experienced smaller increases compared to other countries. At first, Germany saw steady growth, before falling somewhere after 1999. Then, in 2003, they were met with a sudden spurt, settling at just over 90 million USD. Despite the disappointing journey, they remained at first place throughout the period. Italy faced similar challenges, dropping down to just under 50 milliond USD in 1999, but then steadily increased and finished above 60 million USD.
France and Austria were more fortunate during this period. France started at approximately 55 million USD and faced little to no declines before reaching around 65 million USD by 2005. Austria started the lowest (around 30 million USD) and even decreased after 1997 to under it’s initial amount. Then, a sudden growth in 1999 skyrocketed their numbers, allowing them to surpass Italy before 2003 and settle at just above 60 million USD by the end of the time frame.
