The line graph illustrates the monthly ridership of four transportation forms – subway, tram, bus, and bike share – in a European metropolitan area between 1980 and 2030.
Overall, subway ridership consistently remained the highest throughout the period and showed the most significant growth, while bike share recorded the lowest figures since its introduction in 2000. Bus usage, meanwhile, declined steadily over time.
Subway ridership started at 2.5 million in 1980 and remained stable until 1990. It then rose steadily to 3.5 million by 2010, plateaued until 2020, before climbing sharply to 4.5 million in 2030. Tram usage followed a similar upward pattern, beginning at just 0.3 million in 1980 and rising gradually to 1.5 million by 2020, before reaching 2 million in 2030.
In contrast, bus ridership, which started at approximately 1.6 million in 1980, declined gradually to around 1.1 million by 2020 and fell further to 0.8 million by 2030. Bike share, the only mode introduced later, began at 0.2 million in 2000 and increased slowly, reaching just 0.6 million by 2030, remaining the least used option throughout.
