From 1994 to 2006, both figures continued to rise and became equal at around 3 million barrels per day. After that point, consumption increased significantly, reaching about 6.2 million barrels by 2006. In contrast, production grew at a much slower pace and reached only around 3.5 million barrels per day by the end of the period.
