The line graph illustrates the proportion of citizens in Africa using mobile and fixed-line phones between 1994 and 2004.
Overall, the percentage of people subscribing to two types of phones increased over the research period. Additionally, mobile phone use witnessed significant growth in the given time.
In 1994, 1.7% of people used fixed-line phones, which was higher than the figure for mobile phones, at 0.06%.
After three years, the proportion of both mobile and fixed-line phones saw a slight increase to about 0.2% and 2%, respectively.
From that time onwards, there was a heavy increase in the percentage of the population using mobile phones. Specifically, in 2001, the data for mobile phones rose to more than 2.5% and surpassed that of fixed-line phones to become the highest rank in terms of phone use by people in Africa. In the three-year period from 2001, the percentage of citizens subscribing to mobile phones grew to 8.8%, compared with only 3.1% for fixed-line phones.
