Overall, there was a considerable growth in every purpose travelling over the given period. In addition, holiday’s purpose had the highest figure among three others and also witnessed the most significant increase during the same time.

In the first year examined, holiday was the main reason for foreign visitors coming to England, standing at around 6,5 million. After reaching a peak of 9 million in 1994, the quantity of tourists declined significantly to 7 million in 1999. Over the five years later, visitors coming to England for holiday hit the low of over 6 million before finishing at 9 million, higher of 2,5 million than that of in the starting point.

Looking at other purposes, the number of overseas tourists travelling to the UK for business was 5 million, followed by bottomed at just over 4 million in 1994. Ten years later, the figure for visitors for business grew dramatically of 4 million in 2004 which exceeded that of the holiday’s purpose and then dropped moderately to 7 million by the end of the period. Starting from about 4,5 million in 1989, a gradual rise of approximately 7 million was experienced in the number of visitors for the purpose of meeting friends and relatives in 2004 in spite of slight fall to around 6 million in the last five years of the surveyed period, which was nearly two-fold growth than the starting point.
