The two maps illustrate changes to the area around a lake between 2000 and 2009.
Overall, the area underwent significant redevelopment, particularly in the north-west and central areas, with woodland space substantially reduced and several residential zones replaced by commercial and educational facilities.
In 2000, green woodland occupied much of the eastern side of the map, with a lake at its centre from which a stream ran diagonally across the area to join the river. The north-west was dominated by a residential area, alongside derelict warehouses and the old town. Further south stood an arts centre, a school, and a larger residential area, while an industrial complex and another smaller residential area lay to the south and across the river.
By 2009, the most striking change is the reduction of the woodland by roughly half, with the lake correspondingly shrinking into a small pond. In the north-west, the derelict warehouses were demolished and replaced by a car park, while the old town was cleared to make way for a block of offices. To the east of the offices, a university was newly built, and the school remained in place. The arts centre was replaced by a multi-screen cinema, and the large residential area to its south was converted into a shopping centre. Meanwhile, the residential area to the south of the river was absorbed into the industrial complex, which expanded considerably, whereas the residential area in the north-west remained unchanged.
In conclusion, the lakeside area experienced substantial geographical and architectural transformation: green space gave way to urban development, derelict and residential land was repurposed for commercial and educational use, and industry expanded to occupy a much larger footprint.
