The pie chart illustrates the percentage of various types of families living in poverty in the UK during the year 2002.
Overall, sole parents had the largest share of different categories of households experiencing deprivation, while the proportion of aged couples and spouses with no children saw notably lower figures.
At a glance, single-parent families had the highest proportion, representing 26% equivalent to one-fourth of those living in deprivation, showing that this group is the most vulnerable. Similarly, single adults without children also comprised around 24%, nearly one-fourth of the impoverished population, whereas all households accounted for 14% of those affected, placing them fourth in the ranking.
In contrast, the figures for aged couples and elderly individuals occupied the smallest share of family categories, highlighted by 5% and 7%, respectively. Additionally, couples with children were more disadvantaged, with 15% of them suffering from poverty. By contrast, the proportion of childless couples experiencing deprivation, at 9%, was lower than that of couples with children.
