The pie chart illustrates the proportion of female poverty in the United States as of 2008. Whereas, the bar graph depicts rates of poverty among men and women over various age groups.
Overall, it is readily apparent that women are the most poor across different ages when compared to men. Furthermore, single ladies without children are the poorest followed by single moms among others.
Almost half of the total poor women, about 54%, are single ladies without children. Single women with children are almost double in proportion at 26%, when compared to married ones with no child, which are just around 12% of the total. Married ladies with dependent children comprise 8% of the total.
Over the years, the poverty rate of women is consistently above men. However, at the age bracket of 5-17 rate of poverty of both; men and women, are same at approximately 15%. Afterwards, in the next age group of 18-24, the poverty rate of women skyroketed reaching above 20%, while the men has displayed a moderate decline of just 2%. Later on, the poverty rates of both declined gradually, untill age group of 45-54 after which they fluctuated a bit and resulted in women at about 13% and men at about 5% for ages over 75.
