Overall, the total value of fish imported to the US increased steadily throughout the period. In terms of sources, Canada experienced a substantial decline, while the shares of China and other countries increased, with the latter becoming the largest supplier from 1992 onwards.
The value of fish imports rose steadily from $6.57 billion in 1988 to $8.52 billion in 1992 before reaching $10.72 billion in 2000.
Canada accounted for the largest share in 1988 at 60%, but this figure fell sharply to 31% in 1992 and then to 28% in 2000.
By contrast, the proportion of fish imported from other countries climbed from 27% to 46%, making it the leading source in 1992, before declining slightly to 42% in 2000.
Meanwhile, China’s share increased steadily from 13% in 1988 to 20% in 1992 and eventually reached 30% by 2000.
