Overall, the maximum sales were recorded for other books in 1972, but adult fiction books took the lead in the rest of the given period. Also, fiction books sales increased, while the popularity of all the remaining books either decreased or fluctuated.
Looking at the graph in more detail, in 1972 the sales of both adult fiction books and children’s fiction books was 20% each. Both their sales increased with time and in 2012 adult fiction sales contributed about 45% of total sales, whereas children’s fiction accounted for 25% of the total book sales.
On the other hand, share of sales of other books and biographies fell over time. A quarter of the books sold were other books in 1972, and their share decreased to 12% by 2012. The figures for biographies decreased from 20% in 1972 to only 8% in 2012. Finally, the sales of travel books fluctuated over time. Their sales accounted for 15% of the total sales in 1972, 18% in 1992 and only 10% in 2012.
