The three pie charts compare changes in the shares of five different types of books sold by a bookseller in 1972, 1992 and 2012.
Overall, while the shares of two items experienced rises, there were declines in the remaining three. Moreover, the others accounted for the largest proportion of sales throughout the survey at the beginning of the period, but then it halved by the end of the period.
In detail, the percentage of children’s fiction and Adult fiction, which both started at 20 percent in 1972, also saw positive trends. Adult fiction nearly doubled its share, reaching 45% by 2012. Although children’s fiction exhibited the slowest growth, it still managed a modest increase of 20%, ending at 25%.
In contrast, the shares of the others and biography started at 25% and 20% in 1972; both of them reduced, falling to 12% and 8% by the ending of the period, respectively. The share of travel books constituted the minority (15 percent) of books in 1972 and this also saw a gradual reduction with fluctuation, declining 10% in 2012.
