The table presents some of the world’s widely studied languages.

Overall, the largest amount of people are learning English, while the smallest amount belongs to Japanese. The same is true for the number of countries where the language is spoken. Nevertheless, there are the greatest number of Chinese native speakers.

English is the only language that has 1.5 billion learners and ranks first, followed by French with 82 million and Chinese with 30 million. Moreover, no more than 30 million people are learning the other three languages combined. These consist of 14.5 million Spanish learners, 8 million Italian learners and 3 million Japanese learners. Likewise, Spanish, Italian and Japanese are spoken in 31, 29 and 25 countries, respectively. The other three languages are on the podium in this column as well. There are 101 countries where English is spoken, followed by French with 51 countries and Chinese with 33 countries.

However, there are 1.39 billion Chinese native speakers that is the only billion in this category. English ranks second here with 527 million, followed by 389 million Spanish speakers. Individuals whose mother tongue are French and Japanese are 118 million and 123 million, respectively, while Italian native speakers are 67 million, the least number.
