Overall, New Zealand saw an increase in its population over the period. Similarly, there were rises in the numbers of residents of different ages by varying degrees, except for that of the under-40 group. It is also notable that people aged 15-39 accounted for the largest share in the demographics throughout.
Looking first at age brackets in which the population increased, there was an increase of 0.6% in the number of citizens in New Zealand, increasing from about over 4,380,000 to 4,410,000. A similar degree of rise was also seen in the second most populous group, the 40-64 category. Notably, despite the smallest number of residents, which was only about one-eighth of the total population, the 65+ bracket rose the most significantly, with a growth rate of 4%.
Turning to the remaining categories, though the number of people aged 15-39 saw a slight decrease of 0.2%, it still remained the highest throughout (about 200,000 people more than the second largest group). The figure for the under-15 bracket was just over a half of the former, however, it recorded the same degree of decrease over the period.
