Among these families, single people and couples that have kids were the major contributers to the number of people that could not support themselves financially. Coversely, old age households had the smallest percentage of people in this situation.
In Australia, 11% of the population were unable to support their life in 1999, and of those people the majority were sole parents, which attributed to 21%. Followed by singles without children at 19%. Moreover, despite a noticeable number of couples with kids (12%) struggling, only few of those without kids were affected economically (7%).
Furthermore, The older population of the country was the least affected by financial struggle. Single aged people and elderly couple accounted for 6% and 4% respectively, making them better economically than all the other households.
