The chart compares poverty rates among a number of categories of australian families in 1999.
It is clear that single parents were the poorest among all classes in the given date. In contrast, aged couples showed the least proportion of poverty.
Looking at the table in more detail, it is noticeable that about 1.9 million households were classed as poor, which made 11% of the whole population in 1999. Single individuals, both with or without a child, experienced the highest percentages of poverty, at 21% and 19% respectively. 12% of couples who had children with the highest number of people among all (under one million) were also thought to be in hard economic conditions. While couples with no children experienced 5% less poverty.
Aged individuals were considered to be in a significantly better conditions; however, single elderly people, showes 2% higher rates in comparison to couples whom only 4% suffered from being poor.
