The table compares television audiences, measured in millions, for four sports – tennis, golf, motor racing and athletics – in Australia, the UK, the USA and Canada.
Overall, the USA recorded the highest total number of viewers, whereas Canada had the lowest. In terms of sports, tennis attracted the largest audience across the four countries, while motor racing was the least popular overall.
Looking first at tennis and golf, tennis consistently drew large audiences in all four nations, with figures varying only slightly from 6.1 million in Canada to 7 million in the USA. Golf, however, displayed a much greater disparity. The USA led by a considerable margin with 11.2 million viewers, which was approximately four times the figure for the UK and more than double that of Australia. Canada, meanwhile, recorded a relatively modest 3.4 million viewers for this sport.
A different pattern can be seen for motor racing and athletics. Motor racing generally attracted fewer viewers, although it was particularly popular in the UK, where the audience reached 6.4 million. This figure was substantially higher than those for Australia, the USA and Canada, all of which remained below 4 million. Athletics showed a more balanced distribution, with viewership ranging from 3 million in Australia to 5.5 million in the USA, while the UK and Canada recorded intermediate figures of 4.5 million and 3.9 million respect
