In addition, Portuguese is the preferred spoken language.
It can be seen that the language with the most native speakers is Mandarin Chinese at 900 million, despite the fact that English is the language with the most speakers as an additional language. One of the most significant changes that has taken place over the given period is the transition from Mandarin Chinese to English in both number of speakers. While the number of native speakers who speak English witnessed a remarkable decline from 900 million to 190 million, the number of speakers as an additional language who speak English underwent an upward trend from 339 million to 603 million. The latter is considered the most widely spoken language by number of speakers as an additional language, surpassing the former. Another significant language which is noted in both categories is Hindi, ranking second in number of native speakers at 370 million and third in number of speakers as an additional language at 120 million.
Moving now to the three remaining categories, the total number of speakers in both categories experienced a downward trend. The rate of decrease from the number of speakers as an additional language in Spanish, Arabic, and Portuguese is three times, eight times, and twenty times lower, respectively. These three categories are the least widely spoken in both categories.
