The chart sources data regarding the number of native speakers who speak a certain tongue, alongside the value of non-native speakers who speak the language.
As observed, Mandarin Chinese has the largest number of local users, whilst English has the greatest value of additional speakers. It is notable that Mandarin still exceeds English in total numbers by a small margin.
Upon further analysis, major languages such as Spanish and Hindi are behind Mandarin by a massive amount, with the difference between Mandarin and Hindi being a whopping 530 million in native speakers. However, after this dramatic contrast, the remaining languages differ in value of native speakers by negligible increments, with Spanish and English trailing behind Hindi with 350 million and 339 million respectively. Additionally, whilst Arabic and Portuguese have the lowest numbers in natives, they also fail to increase their ranking with additional speakers.
Furthermore, English is the sole tongue whose non-native users surpass the natives in number. It defeats the runner up, Mandarin, by a stupendously large jump of approximately 400 million.
Thus, whilst Mandarin is spoken by the most number of natives, and also wins globally, English is spoken by the highest number of non-natives.
