Dear Mr. and Mrs. Collins,

I am writing this letter to thank you for inviting me to Chris’ surprise birthday party and wanted to apologize for being unable to attend the party.

I wanted to tell you that Chris will absolutely love the surprise party. During our college days, he always used to talk about surprises’ and told me how he has always wished to be surprised on his birthday. Undoubtedly, he will love the surprise. I really want to attend the party but unfortunately, I cannot be there.

The most immediate reason is that my aunt has been diagnosed with complete kidney failures. As per doctors’ suggestions, we need to start her dialysis sessions from next week. So, I need to be here to support her during her most difficult time.

However, I would be travelling to Australia next month for a summer course and would be able to meet Chris during that time. I really miss him since, as we have not met since the new year night.

I wish you all the best for the surprise party and hope that you would understand my situation.
