Hi Mary, this is David, who is your best friend. Last week, I borrowed your watch, and unfortunately, it got damaged while I was using it. I want to write this letter to explain what happened.

First, I want to let you know that I wore that watch to my sister’s party, which was very important to her. I tried my best to make a good impression on her and her friends. You know, it was her university graduation celebration, and everyone was dressed in nice clothes, including me. I thought I should wear a nice dress and a good watch, so I decided to borrow yours. You’re so generous and easily lent it to me. However, it was my fault for not being careful when I reached for the wine and accidentally touched the table corner. That caused the watch to get scratched. After the party, I went to a watch store to see if I could repair it, but it couldn’t be restored to its original condition. I am very sorry about this, and I hope you can understand.

I will replace it with a new one gladly, as a small way of making up for my mistake.
