Overall, it can be seen that grammar schools and voluntary-controlled schools experienced a decrease in the proportion of pupils, while communitary schools, an increase. Conversely, specialist schools had a more stable number of students throughout the period.

Grammar and voluntary-controlled schools presented a clear decreasing trend. In 2000, 24% of students attended grammar schools. This percentage dropped to 19% in 2005, and 12% in 2009. As for voluntary-controlled schools, most students attended these intitutions in 2000, accounting for 52%. They experienced a drop in the following years: 38% in 2005, and 20% in 2009.

On the other hand, community schools had a 12% attendance in 2000. This figure increased to 32% in 2005, and climbed to 58% in 2009, being the most chosen type of school at the end of the period.

Finally, specialist schools had a consistant percentage of students, being between 12% and 10%.
