Overall, the number of adults participating has either increased or remained consistent for a majority of different sports in 2017 when compared with 1997, except in Cricket. Cricket, witnessed a huge decline in the number of participants by around 20,000 from 26,000 in 1997 to 6,000 in 2017. On the other hand, Football and Rugby experienced the greatest jump in the number of participants from 1997 to 2017. In both the years of comparison, adults playing Tennis have dominated over any other sport.
In 1997, majority of adults of the area, at around 50,000, played Tennis and Basketball was the least played sport at around 9,000. On the other hand, though, Tennis maintained its position of being the most participated sport with around 55,000 players. The position of least played sport was overtaken by Cricket with only 6,000 adults of the area playing this particular sport.
In conclusion, though we might mark some fluctuations in the trend of adults playing a major sport, there is a clear direction that the people’s participation in most of the sports being played in the area has increased.
