Band 6+: A growing number of people feel that animals should not be exploited by people and that they should have the same rights as humans, while others argue that humans must employ animals to satisfy their various needs, including uses for food and research. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge

Increasing number of people are of the view that animals should not be exploited by the mankind, having the same rights as humans, while others think that people must use animals to meet their different needs, including food and research. Although nowadays, there is more inclination of preserving the rights of animals, I believe they should be used to meet the needs of mankind, providing us with food, clothing and being a part of the research projects in order to sustain and protect people.

Contenders of animal rights argue that it is unjustified to keep using innocent creatures for our needs, especially when they are not at a liberty to speak for themselves. Slaughtering millions of animals, using their skins for clothing and making them undergo painful experiments which does not serve any purpose are considered barbaric activities. For example, in Pakistan, high school curriculum includes experimentation on frog’s shin muscles which leaves them injured and paralyzed or introducing atropine drops in their eyes, leaving them blind. These sorts of activities are deemed unnecessary and a way of inflicting pain, when it can totally be avoided.

Conversely, animals play a significant role in sustainability and supporting mankind. Some animals are used as food by humans, many medicines like antibiotics have been made using them, experimentation on them led to the discovery of vaccination; all of these resulted in saving billions of human lives over the centuries. For instance, Penicillin, a broad range antibiotic, was invented because of a mold. Therefore, had this experimentation not been done; Of course, in a controlled manner, the mankind would not have survived for so long.

In conclusion, more people are inclined towards protecting the rights of animals, leaving a few that still believe that they ought to play their role wherever needed. I am of the opinion that animals should be kept in use within the ethical parameters for the purpose of maintenance of life, providing us with food and a being subject for justified experimentation.
