In the contemporary world, thanks to the latest technological innovations it is possible for employees and students to work and study from home. I think it is partially a negative tendency because it has detrimental effects on people’s wellbeing and quality of work in the long run; however, the mentioned trend has its own positive aspects.
The most important consideration is the fact that remote working and learning harms people’s physical and psychological condition. This is because, working and studying from home reduces physical activity of individuals by encouraging a sedentary lifestyle, which in turn, leads to severe health issues such as heart diseases, obesity, and posture problems. As well as this, distance work and education negatively influences workers’ and students’ mental wellbeing, due to lack of socialization. In other words, less human interaction causes individuals to feel more isolated, which is one of the main reasons of depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. For instance, recent researches indicate that depression and obesity rates increased among citizens during the quarantine period, as distance education and work were made compulsory by the government.
Furthermore, working and studying from home reduces the quality of work. This is due to the fact that, people usually have unproductive working conditions at their homes, since there are many distractions like background noises. In addition to this, remote employees and students can face technical issues such as poor internet connections, which in turn, damages their productivity. As a consequence, online working and learning not only negatively affects the quality of work, but also decreases productivity of individuals. To justify all said above, studies illustrate that digital students and workers tend to perform poorly compared to their traditional counterparts.
On the other hand, it is also possible to make the opposing case. It is often argued that flexibility of virtual working and studying offers many benefits such as saving resources. The reason for this is that, with a flexible schedule people can save their time as well as their money since they do not have to commute to work or school everyday. In other words, instead of being stuck at traffic jam, young adults and children can enjoy their free time. Thus, they will have more chances to strengthen their bonds with family members or improve themselves by simply engaging in hobbies. As a result, thanks to the saved resources through digital work and education, individuals have opportunities to fulfill family life and improve themselves.
In conclusion, I consider the tendency of working and studying from home as partially negative, since it creates undesirable effects on both the health of individuals and the quality of work; however, on balance, it provides opportunities to save time and money with less commuting.
