There has been a lot of controversy around the necessity of learning a foreign language in school. In my view, it is a must to know at least one foreign language in this day and age for a couple of reasons, which will be discussed in this essay.
To begin with, in this technology-focused world, intercultural communication has been facilitated, leading to more dynamic connections between nations worldwide. Moreover, it is an undeniable fact that language plays a key role in communication. So, the more languages one knows, the more opportunities one has to promote oneself in one’s career life. This is exactly why I think knowing an international language is inevitably necessary. Although it may be difficult for children, learning a foreign language at an early age has proven to be more effective than learning it at an older age. A child’s mind works more productively; on top of that, children have a capable memory for learning foreign languages. There are also some points against learning a second language in school. The opponents of this idea may not attach great importance to acquiring a foreign language in school because of the lack of time, the difficulty of the process, and its off-putting effect on children. However, as the saying goes, the most difficult step is the first one.
To conclude, In my opinion, knowing a foreign language in this global village is a must. Moreover, it seems logical to start this process in school, as it is easier at a young age because of a more capable memory.
