Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 6+: An increasing number of educational institutions are replacing traditional proctored exams with continuous, AI-based online assessments. Do the advantages of this shift outweigh the disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, an increased number of academic institutions are choosing to use AI-based online assessments over traditional proctored exams. Although automated exam systems are accurate, cost-saving and unbiased, human teachers provide face-to-face feedback to students. I believe the advantages of AI-based system outweigh the benefits of human instructions.

On the one hand, students get accurate results from the AI system. Because these automated system rarely make mistakes when marking the exams , students benefit from highly reliable results. Furthermore, schools also benefit from this development because its saves them money; they don’t have to hire teachers for exam supervision and marking. In addition, there is no human bias in the system. The platform marks the exams with complete equality compared to humans, who may favour certain students. For example, a teacher may favour the brighter students to increase their total score, but with this technological advancements, the system marks strictly to what the student has written. As a result, this promotes equality and the provision of accurate exam outcomes.

On the other hand, teachers are able to provide real-time feedback to student. Students need immediate guidance and response after sitting for a test in order to improve in sections where they struggled. Therefore, these human tutors are able to note student weaknesses and give advice on areas for improvement; this can dramatically increase the overall academic performance. For instance, a student who repeatedely fail a math unit and never improve need advice on what do in order to increase their marks. With a teacher’s presence, they can receive special strategies to apply when studying. Consequently, this improves their performance and also builds their confidence.

In conclusion, traditional proctored exams facilitates face-to-face feedback that boosts students performance and morale. However, the use of AI assessments carries a number of benefits, including costs saving and grading accuracy. This proves that the advantages of AI assessments method outweigh those of human instructors.
