There have been an increase in the amount of homestudy as the main education method for children, thanks to the easier reach of said method and the advanced technology needed to support it is becoming more affordable. I believe that the increase of children studying from home is a negative development for them.
The decision of a child’s educational journey is not being put upon themselves, but rather is decided by his or her parents. Children who are homeschooled will have a limited social development and thus unable to fully realize their own potential once they grow older.
A child’s interaction is hindered as they are studying from home. They are not able to create friendships with people around their age in which they are limited to mostly talk to their parents and tutors hired by them. This will limit their social development as they miss out on events that may be created with fellow children, such as field trips, playtime, and sleepovers that can not be replicated by any form of technology. This will cause the children’s inability to take social cues once they’re grown out of their home environment, whether it be when they enter university or find jobs once they graduate.
Additionally, children will not fully recognize their interests if they are homeschooled. The main point of having clubs in a school is for children to find what kind of extracurricular activities they are interested in and increase their capabilities in that interest with their fellow club members. Unless the parents are affluent enough to fund their son or daughter through hiring tutors across different hobbies, children will be fixated in few subjects. This can cause them to burn out sooner due to them studying the same thing over and over, while not able to fully discover what they are fully interested in or trying out new hobbies that can be realized by joining different clubs in school.
Overall, the decision for parents to put their children to study at home has disadvantages that outweigh the benefits. While there is indeed a potential for a child to get bullied by attending a public school, said risk
can be mitigated by selecting which school the children is attending. This will fully realize their interests and potential, but at the same time also develop their social skills by creating memories through friendships that will last a lifetime.
