In recent decades, the local cultures have been at risk of disappearing due to globalization. Whilst some people believe it may contribute to cultural homogenization, I am strongly convinced that local traditions can flourish in a globalized society.
First of all, one of the main reasons why locals cultures can survive in today’s globalized world is the exposure through the internet and social media. Nowadays, a large number of modern platforms can be found, where it is allowed to listen to foreign music, virtually explore new places and food in order to raise the awareness of local identities to international audience. For instance, k-pop and k-dramas have been famous all over the world recently because of social networks, still continuing to appeal to millions of people. Subsequently, it strengthens the interest of foreigners in new cultures, helping local traditions to become more valued. Alternatively, without the constant promotion through online platforms, most cultures would have remained invisible for others or even disappeared.
Another vital factor in possible prosperity of local cultures is the growth of international tourism. This is chiefly due to the fact that tourists seek authentic cultural experiences, such as traditional festivals and local cuisine, thereby serving as one of the primary income resources for government. To provide an example, in Kyoto, Japan, an increase in foreign visitors lately has lead to a preservation of tea ceremonies, as these element attracts foreigners and provides economic benefits for country. As a result, it makes governments preserve the cultural heritage; not only can it improve the economy, but it also encourages locals to keep their traditions alive. If there had been no tourists, the customs would have already been forgotten or destroyed to make way for modern traditions and buildings.
In conclusion, although globalization can be seen as a threat for unque cultural identities, it also offers valuable opportunities for their development. I believe that with the help of global internet exposure and tourism, local heritage can gain wider recognition and economic support, being able to flourish in the future.
