It is suggested that children who do not have a natural talent for a specific subject, they should not be forced by schools to learn it. Although students should develop their talents to acquire better academic achievements, but within a constrained scope of subjects. However, I lean towards the fact that exposure on diverse subjects from an early age can improve their general ability and broaden their horizons even if it is unsuitable to their career subjects.
Admittedly, there are some detrimental factors occuring from children study in untalented subjet matters. First and foremost, psychological strees and loss of motivation, which occurs from forced learning. Cumpolsory engagement in which student often underperform can lead to anxiety, depression, and discouragement, leaving children with a negative attitude towards learning in general. Another demerit of forced learning is suppression of individual talents. Must-study subjects can prevent children from fully development of their natural talents and abilities. Learners with interests and abilities in economics, for instance, can be limited by excessive learning of art, which is irrelevant to their future aspirations.
With that said, there are way more critical benefits of forced benefits, which supersede its downsides. First of all, mandatory learning of a particular subjects accelerates developement of core cognitive skills. Even if a child struggles to learn a subject, constant exposure to it can foster transferable skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and logical reasoning. For example, student learning methamatics can reinforce his or her analytical capabilities, while learning literature can promote his or her social skills and comprehension – development from different angles. It is also worth mentioning that mandatory learning means equality in educational opportunities. Entailing all students to learn core subject ensures to minimum standard of knowledge across community. This, in turn, can reduce educational disparities, which are common in today’s world.
In conclusion, while psychological stress, loss of motivation, and suppression of talents are the main drawbacks of forced learning by shools, I, however, reiterate that exposure on different subject matters can, at least, foster their core cognitive skills and broaden their horizons.
