Some people think that community service is a better punishment than prison for people who commit minor crimes. I agree with this opinion to a large extent, because prison can make small offenders worse and community service is more useful for society.
Firstly, prison is not a good place for people who commit minor crimes, such as stealing in a shop or breaking public property. In prison, these people meet dangerous criminals and they can learn bad behaviour from them. Also, when a person goes to prison, he often loses his job and has problems with his family. As a result, after prison it is difficult to find work and he may commit crime again. For example, a young man who steals a phone can stay in prison for a few months, and then he can not find a job because of his criminal record.
Secondly, community service has many advantages for both the offender and the society. People who do community service, for example cleaning streets or helping old people, can understand the result of their actions and give something back to the community. Moreover, they can stay at home and keep their job, so their life is not destroyed. It is also cheaper for the government, because prisons are very expensive and they are often overcrowded. This money can be used for schools or hospitals.
However, community service is not suitable for everyone. If a person commits a serious or violent crime, prison is necessary to protect other people. Also, the government must control that offenders really do their work, otherwise the punishment will be too soft.
In conclusion, I believe that community service is better than prison for minor crimes because it is cheaper, more useful and helps people to change. But for dangerous criminals prison is still the best solution.
