It is often argued that cricket is a more popular game than football. I strongly disagree with that statement. I believe cricket is only popular in specific countries, while football is dominant all over the world.
On the one hand, cricket is famous in fewer countries compared to football, particularly in my own country. The national sport accredited by the government is hockey, yet many people are more passionate about cricket than they are about hockey. For instance, during the World Cup final between India and South Africa, people watched with great excitement, even those who weren’t previously interested in cricket. In other words, they were curious to see if the national team would lift the cup. When India won the World Cup, all Indians felt immense pride and strong emotions. Additionally, the number of football fans in India has been steadily increasing.
On the other hand, football is globally embraced by people everywhere, thanks to its reputation and the fame of events like the World Cup. Every country has its football fans, largely due to two famous players, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. For example, in the 2024 World Cup final, people from all over the world tuned in to watch the match, which is not the case for cricket. During that match, Argentina led 2-0, and everyone thought France would not score against them. However, that was not true, as a player named Kylian Mbappé managed to score two goals for France in the final moments, shocking everyone. This unpredictability is one reason football is better regarded than other sports like cricket, where situations can change dramatically every minute.
In conclusion, football is far more recognized and popular than cricket due to its unpredictable nature on the pitch.
