Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 9: Differences between countries become less evident each year. Nowadays, all over the world people share the same fashions, advertising, brands, eating habits and TV channels. Do the disadvantages of this trend outweigh the advantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

These days, it is increasingly common to see people around the world adopting similar fashion trends, favoring the same brands, and even sharing identical eating habits and media consumption. Consequently, the distinct differences between countries are gradually diminishing. This essay will argue that the potential drawbacks of this trend significantly outweigh the benefits.

Granted, the global spread of positive trends, particularly those related to health and well-being, can have a beneficial impact on people’s lives worldwide. For instance, the rise of social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram has made it easier for healthy eating habits to gain traction globally. As these lifestyles become popular, people across different regions are more likely to adopt these beneficial dietary practices, leading to improvements in public health.

However, the widespread adoption of global trends at the expense of local customs can lead to a gradual erosion of cultural identity. In Vietnam, for example, many young people have been influenced by Western cultures, adopting clothing styles that emphasize individual freedom. This influence has led to situations where traditional norms are disregarded, such as wearing inappropriate attire in sacred places like temples and pagodas. This lack of respect for local customs has sparked significant debate and even conflict within the community.

Beyond cultural erosion, the dominance of global brands poses a serious threat to local businesses. Large multinational corporations, with their vast resources, can easily outcompete smaller local enterprises through extensive marketing campaigns that shape consumer behavior. By way of illustration, global sports brands like Nike and Adidas have almost monopolized the sportswear market in many countries, leveraging their enormous budgets for advertising, sponsorships, and store placements. This leaves little room for local brands to thrive, ultimately stifling competition and diversity in the market.

In conclusion, while the increasing similarity between countries may offer some minor advantages, such as the dissemination of positive lifestyle trends, I believe that the negative consequences, particularly the loss of cultural identity and the challenges faced by local businesses, are far more significant. This trend threatens to homogenize global cultures and economies, ultimately leading to a less diverse and vibrant world.
