One of the most commonly consumed foods in our society is sugar. Sugar is defined as a complex carbohydrate used to enhance the flavors of a beverage or a food. Nowadays, there is a rise in individuals drinking sugary beverages and as such there is a heated debate as to whether the price of these beverages should be increased or not.
One of the advantages of a bigger price tag is that people will hesitate to buy them. This will indirectly encourage them to consume less sugary drinks and the number of beverages consumed will reduce.
Not only that, various health illnesses associated with excessive sugar consumption can be significantly reduced. Chronic lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and obesity can drop drastically when individuals stop consuming sugary beverages.
However, the downside of this solution is that its effects are short-term. Individuals who are addicted to sugary drinks willingly will pay a higher price to buy these drinks. To completely reduce sugary drinks consumption raising the price alone won’t be enough. One of the measures that can be taken is encouraging children to consume less sugar and eat healthily. Additionally, educational campaigns should be carried out In schools to teach kids at a young age about the detrimental effects of sugar.
In conclusion, I believe that selling sugary drinks at a higher price is a short-term solution so government agencies and communities should work together to implement more practical long-term solutions to curb the negative impacts of consuming excessive sugar.
