Nowadays, individuals tend to read books less than in recent years. There are a couple of causes such as social media and streaming services and certain solutions including encouragement in schools and spending time on reading in family may be taken.
One of the main causes of the problem is that young people choose to spend their free time with smartphone using social media applications. It is widely known that watching some short videos, for instance, in Instagram or in TikTok stimulates fast dopamine for people, whereas books require concentration and attention. This is a reason why they prefer phones rather than books. The solution is to encourage students in schools and universities to read more. Thus, teachers can suggest books with bright pictures for students of primary school. While teenagers may be attracted for meetings of reading club that suggest talking and discussing with writers. The main purpose is to show that reading is not only homework but also the way to get satisfaction.
Another reason is that streaming services such as Netflix and YouTube offer easier entertainment than books. People typically prefer to put on a movie or a TV show instead of reading, because they may do something more at the same time. For example, individuals can have a meal or clean a house while they watch a film. However, reading demands much time to get into the plot and mostly people are not ready to spend this time on books. To tackle this issue, parents should set aside time to read with children together in order to make a habit that books are useful way to learn the world better. For instance, parents might read fairytales to toddlers; and growing children then will understand that book readership is not a waste of time.
In conclusion, the number of book that people read has declined due to such reasons as social media and streaming services. The main responsibility for solving the problem lies with schools and families.
