Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests, and curious minds.
Envision a realm where every student graduates with a profound ability to deal with life’s challenges, difficulties, and is prepared to tackle all aspects of life with ease. Wouldn’t that be a world where nobody would have regrets about going to school? Today, I will argue why schools should dedicate more time to teaching crucial life skills rather than focusing solely on academic subjects.
Communication skills are among the most tangible skills needing improvement. In recent times, with the drastic development of technology and the increase in introversion, the number of people with social anxiety has skyrocketed compared to the past. A recent study conducted by Oxford University found around 70% of people today have social anxiety and fear of public speaking. At this rate, humanity will lose the communication skills in which we specialize.
If you ask a recent graduate to mend a broken table, it is most likely that he would not succeed or would face high difficulties doing so without past experience, even though graduates should be the ones with the freshest minds and knowledge. We have neglected the life skills students will need in their lives and focused on academic subjects that will most likely not help them whatsoever.
Will future generations revere us as the architects of repair, those who boldly charted a path toward a correct education, or condemn us for our neglect in teaching them the vital life skills needed for life? Let’s be the ones that future children look back with pride and gratitude. Let’s create a better life for ourselves and a better future for our children.
